Monson Massachusetts was officially incorporated in 1760. Waterpower was abundant and small mills were scattered over the 48 square miles and thrived for more than 100 years.
These industries have since been replaced by the plastic industry and by Zero Manufacturing Company. Monson Development Center is a facility housing severely handicapped residents and has a pleasant campus setting on 700 acres of land.
The towns Memorial Hall houses a fine Civil War Museum and auditorium. Other museums include an 1811 restored home and a 58 acre farm with a farmhouse containing the only Button Museum. Tourism is popular here because of all of the natural beauty of Monson and its surrounding land.
Guest Speaker, Ellen Sousa of Turkey Hill Brook Farm in Spencer and author of The Green Garden: A New England Guide to Planting and Maintaining the Eco-Friendly Habitat Garden will be here on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 10:30 am. She will talk about which native plants support the highest numbers of pollinators, beneficial insects, birds and other wildlife that depend on them. After the talk, visitors can receive a map of the Norcross gardens and visit these fabulous plants in person! Registration for the class is required, but there is no cost for the program. Come and enjoy a peaceful safe environment to exercise at Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary in Wales. We will conduct a fast paced guided walk, Tuesdays, Wednesdays 7 Thursdays at 8 AM. The Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary will hold a garden open house on Friday May 16, 2014. May is a wonderful time to view the tremendous diversity of wildflowers in our woodland gardens. It is the peak time for spring wildflower blooms and we hope that the Yellow Lady Slippers will be in full bloom for this special event! The open house will take place between the hours of 5pm and 7pm. Leslie Duthie, plant propagator and horticulturist at Norcross, will be in the garden for guided tours and discussion of the wildflowers, both common and rare. Visitors will be directed to the greenhouse area, where tours will leave every half-hour starting at 5pm. The tours and the open house are free to the public. No pre-registration is necessary.
